Eccentric
...............................................................................................................................
Eccentric, a three year old gelding out of Most Welcome who has become
Lingfields giant killer.while it was thought eccentric would be
something special his trainer had to give him time as he was still
growing, now the young gelding if he continues to progress the way he
has done of late will indeed be a very nice type. Some of our better
turf types have gone to Lingfield hoping to get some easy money but
have been thwarted in their attempts by the son of most welcome.
Eccentric's sire Most Welcome is one of the finest sires around and
we should look cautiously at the sires list because the top sires
while of course deserving their place in the list are there because
they get the best mares,it is a bit like fashion just what is in at
the time, nothing more;with better mares most welcome would have been
up there with the best of them.A quick glance at the sires list would
show that the progeny of most welcome are a tough lot with
Eccentric,Kamanda laugh,Tony the Tap,Riley Boys,Duelling Banjo,Welcome
Signal,Snowed under,Galley Law,and Freestyle the list goes on for
these tough handicappers with 22 wins 21 places out of 79 runs in
the 2005 sires list thats not bad at all.
Most welcome is out of Be My Guest and his dam Topsy is out of Habitat
and he was bred by white lodge stud(GB).most welcome was 2nd 1-1/2
L behind reference point in the 1987 derby also in 1987 he ran over
10f at goodwood beating lockton 2L and Allez Millord 8L,in the same
year running 2nd by 2-1/2 L to Triptych at newmarket.in 1989 he ran a
nice mile at newbury beating warning and reprimand by 2L.In nov 1989
breeders cup he was 3rd 1-1/2 L behind Steinlen and Sabona as peter at
sandform said Most Welcome was the one horse who should have had won
more big races.
Eccentric won his second start on the allweather at Lingfield in a
class D maiden stakes for 3yo on the 29th february 2004 at odds of
14/1 he beat Alfridini by a neck who was backed in to be the 15/8F the
time was 1min 25.9 for 7F(61).On the 1st
of september 2004 Eccentric was took within a neck of the unexposed
winner Majors Cast who was carrying 9st 7lbs compared to the runner's
up 9st 2lbs the time for the 7F event was 1min24.9sec(69). At
Lingfield in the first co Acquisitions 0-92 handicap 3yo+ on 21
December 2004 he won the 1m event in a time of 1min39.3(56)
carrying 9st-1lb to beat Binanti carrying 9st-4lbs by 1L with Desert
Lord 3rd ¾ L further back.On the 29th december 2004 in a 3yo+ 0-107
handicap MOAYED carrying 9st 4lbs went from last to first in a tough
looking field of handicappers winning the 7F event in a time of
1min23.6 Eccentric carrying 8st 7lbs was 9th of 11 on this outing some
7L behind but still running a (65).
It was at this point when the out and out allweather horse of the
year looked an easy pick with MOAYED coming from behind to destroy
fields of good horses but then ECCENTRIC decided enough was enough and
went on a killing spree which ended up with the deserved allweather
horse of the year title.Eccentric started his campaign at Lingfield on
the 29th of january 2005 taking a 10f event 2L in front of Little Good
Bay,Howle Hill a further 1-1/4L behind with What a Dancer,Red
Lancer, and Jagger out of it the time was 2m08.3 sec(53).On
the 1st february 2005 the course record of 1min35.8(74)
for the mile was set by Eccentric who carried 9st for an easy 6L
victory in this 4yo+0-100 event with Secret Place and Binanti filling
the other two slots. On the 26th of february 2005 Eccentric soundly
beat off some turf raiders who were aiming for some easy loot but it
was Eccentric who took the 14.8k prize his time for this 10f race was
2m05.2(70) with Gig Harbour the closest
of his rivals some 3L away and Tatheeb and Compton Bolter taking 3rd
and 4th respectively. On the 19th of march 2005 it was show time the A1
listed 4yo+ WINTER DERBY and here we had all the big gun's and we also
had all the talk of defeated trialists who would put the record
straight this time around,in the line up in the order of finish was
1st ECCENTRIC,2nd BLYTHE KNIGHT,3rdHURRICANE ALLEN,4TH COMPTON BOLTER,
5TH CORRIOLANUS,6TH ECOMIUM,7TH MOAYED,8TH AFRICAN DREAM,9TH GRAND
PASSION,
10TH GIG HARBOUR,11TH BILLY ALLEN,12TH COUNCILS OPINION,13TH
CALUKI,14TH HOWLE HILL.
In a time of 2min03.7(77) for the 10f
title and winners cheque of 58k,Eccentric got the lead stayed there
and wound it up down the stretch to get everyone off the bridle early
for an easy victory. We need to mention that on the 3rd of june
Eccentric competed for,and won the vodafone rose bowl heritage
handicap 4yo+ on turf for a first prize of 43k in 6th place was RED
LANCER and in 10th place was SPANISH DON,12TH BLYTHE KNIGHT,and KEW
GREEN 15TH.Lingfield made history by landing the first ever group race
on the allweather the race unfolded as follows Eccentric was bounced
out of the stalls but was then taking in hand by JF Egan trying for
the soft lead which would never happen due to the fact miss Gay
Kelleway had NERUD style tactics in mind,Kelleway's main horse vortex
would sit back and wait while Lygeton Lad a class performer in his hey
day was there to mix it up and make sure the pace was hot,so as
Eccentric was eased hoping for this soft lead two horses rushed up to
join him one was Lygeton Lad,Egan on Eccentric seemed to get caught up
in this three way tussle so he slotted in just off the leaders as they
entered the stretch everything kicked except the leaders and Eccentric
drifted tamely back over 5L 9th behind 1ST AUTUMN GLORY,2ND COURT
MASTERPIECE,3RD VORTEX,4TH BABODANA etc. When looking over the race the
tactical mistake took place in the first furlong IF Eccentric had been
allowed to up the anti rather than be taking back Kelleway's tactics
would have failed,Eccentric had to much early toe for these he is the
mile record holder here at lingfield and is the 10f winter derby
champion, fast out the gate, early toe, record speed and 10f stamina he
would have had these off the bridle and the outcome would have been
different, all of that said nothing could be taking away from the
winner who ran a 1min36.4 mile(79).In the
summer slumber we can only dream of what may happen in the up and
coming winter months of 2005/2006,one thing is for sure the allweather
code is stronger than ever and like a giant snow ball picking up speed
and size as it hurtles down hill, it is here to stay as is Lingfields
giant killer ECCENTRIC.
