Five All-Weather Courses

.....................................................................................................................................

There are currently four all-weather courses.  However, they will be joined by Great Leighs in Essex in 2007 and by perhaps Newmarket, Sedgefield, Mussleburgh in following years.  The following is a short synopsis of the tracks for the enthusiast new to the code.  In our subscription area we have in-depth profiles of each course.

Lingfield

The 'flagship' All-Weather course according to Arena Leisure, the owners of the three current All-Weather tracks. It certainly stages some good racing during the season, including the Churchill Stakes and the Winter Derby.

The course has recently undergone a major refurbishment costing in excess of £6 million, and the all weather programme at all of Arenas All-weather courses have now become highly competitive with prize money at all three tracks totalling around £5 million this current season.

Complete with the universally acclaimed Polytrack surface, Lingfield can be applauded for the improvements made to venue. However, the Surrey track still has one or two wrinkles - the desperate view of the track, and the lack of pace in many races over a mile and upwards.

Southwell

A small, but feisty crowd at a midweek meeting at Southwell in March or April is just the thing to welcome Spring. And in the depths of winter the hot pork sandwiches are just the thing to warm the cold or wet horseplayer.

Southwell has a reputation of being second rate, but is held in high regard by the Sandform team, after many enjoyable afternoons at the Nottinghamshire track.

Wolverhampton

This fibresand course is a favourite of the Sandform team, with excellent viewing and course facilities.  Its mid-summer night meetings provide a racing atmosphere unsurpassed by any other course, primarily due to the ambience created by the floodlighting.  If you haven't been yet, get yourself along - you will not be disappointed.

A tight little track, which is due for major remedial work to the course over the Summer period of 2004, the course will be transformed into a bigger Polytrack circuit and will also boast a 'Racino' - Arena Leisure's name for the casino extension.

Great Leighs

Great Leighs is the UK’s first brand new racecourse in 80 years with a new approach to the racing experience.

Racing all year round – from summer days to floodlit winter nights – there racing will be part of an extensive entertainment package, with bars and restaurants open long after racing has finished. The county’s first sports betting hall will be open on additional days for football, cricket, Formula One and other major events. In the spirit of the old Essex County Showground, outdoor events and concert extravaganzas are also planned.

The 165-acre site is north of Chelmsford, Essex. Its eastern border is on the A131 Great Leighs bypass.

The grandstand (pictured) is not built yet, This is Phase Two, In the second stage of development, the planned 10,000 capacity grandstand is acclaimed by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment for setting new standards in contemporary rural design. This futuristic five-storey, 160m building is faced in glass and will be an imposing sight.

A ground floor leisure centre features a fitness suite, a swimming pool and plenty of space for exhibitions, with restaurants and bars on every level - it will be interesting if the builders hype turns into reality.

Kempton

This is another polytrack racecourse, which opened for business in Autumn 2006.

Kempton is a grade one jumps track, and accordingly the facilities at the track are top notch, with good viewing and generally a good grade of racing.

The track itself is a little idiosyncratic with some strong biases, but does have a three furlong run. Horses need to get the sprint distances, but over a mile and further there can sometimes be slow run races.
